The Battle of the Somme live orchestral film screening

Sunday 9th July, 3.30pm
Skipton Town Hall

Sedbergh Orchestra perform The Battle of the Somme live with film at Skipton Town Hall

See the iconic 1916 film The Battle of the Somme by Geoffrey Malins and John McDowell, with Laura Rossi's acclaimed music performed live.

To mark the centenary of the Battle of the Somme, Imperial War Museums (IWM) and Somme100 FILM present this extraordinary and moving UNESCO-listed historical film, accompanied live by the Sedbergh Orchestra.

Smiling awkwardly at the new-fangled cameras, troops move towards the Front in the Great War. Their actions are far removed from the swagger and march of war films, but then this is real. The Battle of the Somme remains one of the most successful British films ever made: almost half the population of the UK at the time watched the film, with over 20 million tickets were sold in Great Britain in the first two months of release (a figure not matched until the release of Star Wars in 1977!).

Battle of the Somme

The screening is part of 100 live orchestral performances taking place worldwide between July 1st 2016 and July 2017 of the iconic 1916 film The Battle of the Sommetomark 100 years since the battle. For more info go to Somme 100 Film.
